ASTRONOMICAL/SCIENCE FICTION VISIONS
RESEARCHING MY SUBJECTS

Child of the Universe

Quote

Sandi Marie has been painting watercolour landscapes forthree decades.

In 1985 she combined her art with her passion for astronomy, science fiction and space travel, creating the breathtaking planets, nebulas, rough planetary terrains and stunning supernovas
she is most noted for today.

Return to Space

Quote

From fellow artist Katherine Allen

"Her technical knowledge is evident in her awesome depictions of the US Space Shuttle, and fantastic imagery of space stations, satellites, vehicles and ships. Her vivid imagination is revealed in her images of astounding planetary canals, frozen oceans, haunted mountain peaks and gentle, ghostly nebulae."

End quote

Do visit Katherine Allen's fantastic site.

A link to her home page can be found on my Favourite Places page. Enjoy.

Return to Space was painted as Discovery made its epic voyage into the heavens in 1988, - the first flight after that horrific day in 86. I had two VCRs going and the TV in real time, as I painted, in order to capture the essence of that historic flight.

COMET TREKING

At any time of the year, Sandi Marie and her husband can be found with binoculars and/or telescope catching another view of the heavens to add to her store house of sky backdrops - the source of another painting. They and their friends have gone Comet Treking over the last few years as the Universe has sent us many spectacular events to behold. Whether it was freezing to death to catch a glimpse of Halley's Comet, or chasing a cloud cover while viewing Hale-Bopp to the north and the alignment of the Moon and Mars to the south east, this couple enjoy their heavenly endeavours."

Stars and Ancient Legends

Even as a child I was always curious about the stars and how they got their names.

I found the legends intruiging and compelling. I tried to imagine being the lonely shephard tending a flock in the darkened skies of old - starring at the patterns and playing connect the dots in a very BIG 'colouring book'.

Who actually named the constellations seems to be lost in antiquity, from a time of great imagination, when mankind began to emerge as a formidible force knowing its universe. Here is one of those legends for you to ponder.

Homeward Isis

Long ago, so the legends go, Isis and Osiris came from the stars to take residence here on Earth.
The tunnel leading from the Queen's Chambers in the Great Pyramid of Giza points towards Orion and the tunnel leading from the King's Chambers points towards Sirius.

These are said to be the places of their origin and the places to which they returned upon departing this life.
One of the more romantic stories surrounding the ancient beliefs, connecting our legends and the stars.

If you have similar interests in the history surrounding the naming of our stars and constellations, please check out the web site of your local astronomy club.
